Taking Action for Zero-Emission Transport

GC Rieber Minerals is proud to take part in a new initiative to enable zero-emission coastal freight.

In collaboration with GC Rieber Shipping and Franzefoss Minerals, we have signed a letter of intent for the development of a fully electric, battery-powered vessel. The project has received funding from Enova through GC Rieber Shipping’s subsidiary, Polar Energy Shipco.

The vessel will be optimized for short-sea operations and reduce emissions from the transport of salts and minerals along the Norwegian coast. GC Rieber Shipping has also signed a letter of intent with K. Sætre & Sønner for the vessel’s operation.

“This support from Enova enables us to accelerate the transition to zero-emission shipping,” says Einar Ytredal, CEO at GC Rieber Shipping.“Together with GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals, we are proud to lead the way in developing cleaner, more efficient maritime transport solutions.”

“This project is a key enabler for us to deliver low-emission transport of salts and minerals,” says Per Gunnar Syrdalen, Chief Commercial Officer at GC Rieber Minerals.

We are proud to be at the forefront of sustainable solutions our customers and partners are asking for. A forward-leaning partnership between freight owners is essential – and the fact that our sister company is leading the way made this possible.

“This project allows us to take a concrete step toward more sustainable freight transport and supports our long-term climate goals,” says Ingrid Hynne Hoem, Logistics Manager at Franzefoss Minerals.

The initiative supports Norway’s broader maritime climate goals and highlights the commercial potential of battery-electric vessels in coastal logistics.
